Fillings and crowns done today do not have to have the unsightly metal show like they did in years past. Today’s modern materials allow teeth needing fillings or crowns to have the look and feel of natural teeth without any metal.
Crowns done today don’t have the opaque, bulky look of crowns done in years past. All porcelain crowns are used routinely today to restore broken down decayed teeth. All ceramic crowns look vital and alive and do not leave a blue grey line around the tooth and gum tissue.
White fillings and all ceramic crowns have many advantages over mercury amalgam fillings. Typically they require less drilling and grinding down of healthy tooth structure. Since they do not expand and contract as drastically with temperature changes like metal does, they do not weaken and crack teeth as is common with the old style fillings.
Mercury amalgam fillings have been used extensively for the past 100 years. These old style mercury fillings can give an otherwise attractive smile a dark grey cast. If you are self conscious about opening your mouth wide and laughing out loud because of all the dark metal, then replacing your fillings with resin or porcelain restorative material may be right for you.
